Redevelopment of the Railway Station – Brno

Brno, Repubblica Ceca

The reconstruction project for the Brno-Královo Pole railway station is part of a national infrastructure modernization plan. Initially, a simple renovation of the existing building was envisioned, but the complexity of the project and the obsolescence of the structure led to the decision to demolish the original building and construct an entirely new one.

The street furniture was also carefully considered: it was designed to integrate with the building’s bold forms and create an interesting contrast with the surrounding natural elements. Different styles were chosen for the outdoor spaces compared to the main atrium and the upper floor, with the aim of maintaining a strong visual and functional connection with the railway environment. Some specific elements:

  • the planters were adapted to match the DIAMANTE and ANASTASIO benches.
  • outside, contrasting with the geometry and colors of the main façade, white STONE and MOONSTONE seats were installed.

The collaboration with engineers and technicians was coordinated by a single point of contact—the country’s local distributor—who facilitated the management of technical aspects and product selection. There were challenges, especially in introducing new technologies, which often clashed with the railway company’s preference for proven, easily maintainable materials. Strict safety regulations also influenced the design and material choices.

The hope is that the renovated station will offer a pleasant and functional experience for passengers and visitors. While acknowledging that some design decisions might differ if work began today, the fundamental principles (functionality, cost containment, and harmony with the context) would remain the same. No further changes are currently planned, but the architect does not rule out the possibility of new collaborations in the future.
