Gorizia, new extra-urban terminal: comfort and identity with Metalco’s HUT shelters

As part of the redevelopment of the area outside Gorizia railway station, the new extra-urban bus terminal has been created: an intervention that completely redefines a space previously used simply for vehicle transit, transforming it into a modern, well-organized and welcoming infrastructure.

The project led to the creation of a large forecourt with eleven lanes dedicated to bus stops and departures, alongside a new waiting area designed for user comfort, enriched with trees and seating. Within this context, Metalco played a key role by supplying the urban furniture elements.

Metalco’s HUT shelters are a central feature of the project: structures designed to provide protection from the elements and improve the quality of waiting, while also helping to define a contemporary architectural language consistent with the overall intervention. The essential design and modularity of the system allow it to blend harmoniously into the space, enhancing the identity of the new terminal. The stop is also equipped for passengers with reduced mobility, confirming the project’s focus on accessibility and inclusiveness.

To meet the designers’ needs, a custom version of the shelters was also created.

The project, carried out by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana in collaboration with the Municipality and with the support of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, is part of the objectives of the Integrated Stations Plan and of the regional strategies for increasingly sustainable and intermodal mobility. The new terminal in Gorizia thus becomes an efficient connection point between rail and extra-urban transport, improving flow management and offering an orderly, safe and recognizable space. In this setting, Metalco’s solutions make a concrete contribution to enhancing the quality of public space, combining functionality, aesthetics and attention to the user experience.

Finally, the intervention represents the first step in a broader redevelopment process for the station area, which is set to evolve in the coming years with new services and infrastructure supporting urban mobility.

Gorizia, Italy

Gorizia is a border city with a unique character, where cultures, languages and different histories have met for centuries.

Located between Italy and Slovenia, it retains an elegant Central European identity, visible in its palaces, its castle and the urban fabric shaped by its cross-border history.

Today, Gorizia looks to the future by building on this very vocation for exchange and connection, so much so that together with Nova Gorica it played a leading role in the GO! 2025 project, the first cross-border European Capital of Culture.
