New San Mauro a Mare seaside promenade

The seafront of San Mauro a Mare, located in the province of Forlì-Cesena, has undergone a major urban redevelopment and regeneration initiative, involving several municipalities along the coast of Emilia-Romagna. The main objective was to create new high-quality spaces, generate new growth opportunities and increase the tourist attractiveness of the region, which welcomes millions of visitors annually.

San Mauro a Mare, a hamlet of San Mauro Pascoli located along the coast, has seen its redevelopment led by the “LAPRIMASTANZA” studio. Initially, the project envisaged the complete demolition of the old road that ran along the beach, which lacked a dedicated cycle path and needed to replace the street furniture and public lighting due to damage caused by atmospheric agents.

The revitalized waterfront now boasts an expanded sidewalk, a newly constructed bike path, and the addition of green spaces. Using materials such as architectural concrete, Corten steel, and colored asphalt reminiscent of beach hues, the new design evokes the sinuous lines of sea waves imprinted on the sand.

Lush green spaces line the pedestrian path, giving it organic shapes, colors, and scents, similar to a natural trail.

All street furniture features a Corten color palette, which harmonizes with the light-toned paving to evoke a pleasant Mediterranean atmosphere.

The design’s stylistic choices are based on the architects’ interpretation of the sea and its surroundings. The sea symbolizes movement, with people at the center of attention, leading to an emphasis on pedestrian spaces over vehicular traffic. Additionally, the sea represents a haven for relaxation, where one can escape the frenetic pace of everyday life and immerse oneself in the tranquil beauty of nature.

This interpretation informs various aspects of the design, including the warm, earthy tones of the street, which evoke a mix of natural and historical elements.

The individual seating for this project, designed by LAPRIMASTANZA and manufactured by Metalco, pays homage to local traditions, reflecting a time when residents would gather in the cool evening breeze, placing their chairs along the dirt road to socialize and seek relief from the summer heat. Known as LAPRIMASEDIA, these seating is strategically placed to encourage community interaction, in line with Metalco’s commitment to social connectivity.

After the redevelopment, the San Mauro a Mare seafront has obtained the prestigious Blue Flag recognition, an international eco-label that rewards seaside destinations that adhere to sustainable land management practices.
