Wood

Wood is a natural material and for this reason each board is different from the other for wood grain, tonality, and natural imperfections. Due to atmosphere conditions changes (hot/cold, dry/wet conditions) wood moisture changes and the wood may increase or decrease its volume, causing cracks and fissure. All of this is natural.

STANDARD METALCO TYPES OF WOOD

A. EXOTIC WOODS
Angelim Amargoso, Iroko,Movingui, Basralocus.
Metalco selects, from time to time, the exotic wood which better suit to the product and/or to the project according to the availability on the market. Wood is always provided after a pigmented vegetable oil impregnation treatment (see finishing). On request wood can be provided without pigmented vegetable oil impregnation treatment. Exotic wood FSC is provided on request, and delivery terms may be extended.

B. LARCH WOOD
Metalco always provides larch PEFC.
Larch is provided solid or glued laminated wood(glulam), depending on the product and on the section worked. Wood is provided autoclaved with a first pigmented vegetable oil impregnation treatment coat (see finishing). On request it may be provided without pigmentation vegetable oil impregnation

C. OKUME’
It is always and exclusively supplied water- based painting (see finishing).

D. OKUME PLYWOOD
It is always and exclusively supplied water-based painting (see finishing). On request RAL painting.

Finishing

Types of wood and available finishing for each product are listed on Metalco catalogues and in this web site.

A. Pigmented vegetable oil impregnation treatment
E’ il trattamento più indicato per i legni esotici duri, come Pauoro, Iroko, Teak o similari.
Tale trattamento non è invece consigliato in caso di legni più teneri (es. Okumé).
Attention: wood surfaces treated with oil naturally tend to turn grey in a variable period of time depending on the environmental characteristics of the place of installation of the product. The formation of the grey patina is a physiological reaction and is a self-protection of wood against weathering, while not affecting the quality of the product. It is still possible to reduce the greying of the wood by making a regular renewal of the oiling process (see “Maintenance”).

CYCLE FOR OILING

1

Automatic brushing

2

Manual application of water-based oil with a spray gun
and brush

3

Storage for air drying

4

Visual quality control
legno-500x280

B. Water- based paint
Tale finitura si esclude su tipologie di legno di maggior durezza come Pauoro, Iroko e Teak e similari, su legno Accoya® e su legno trattato Thermowood®.
Attention: Metalco strongly recommends not to choose varnished wood when a regular maintenance is not possible (see “Maintenance”) and/or in case of severe atmospheric conditions
(saline area, high pollution, steady sun and high temperature exposure, etc.). In such conditions, in fact, varnish coat will quickly deteriorate, causing a visible peeling.

PAINTING CYCLE

Maintenance

On wood elements, Metalco offers warranty only against rot. In contrast, no warranty is provided on the duration of the treatments painting and oiling, although performed in a workmanlike manner, as influenced by numerous factors beyond the manufacturer’s control and may vary from environment to environment. For aesthetic and functional reasons Metalco requires regular maintenance of wooden surfaces (in conditions not particularly aggressive, at least annually). In the case of products which have undergone treatment or touch-up paint that require complete repainting, firstly sand to remove surface dust, dirt and any old paint. Secondly, proceed to the drafting of a good water-based paint for wood with brush or spray, as indicated on the product. The product must ultimately be left to dry (usually a time varying between 2 and 12 hours, depending on the amount and mode of application and climatic conditions). For products that have undergone treatment in oil and that need a touch up, simply proceed to lightly sand the surface to remove deposits of dirt, and then apply a new layer of oil. It is beneficial to proceed with the renewal of the oiling process when you notice that the layer of the previous treatment has lost consistency and is disappearing
(there is no standard but the timing depends on the conditions of “stress” in the environment where the product is placed). In case of any doubt about the proper maintenance procedure, please contact the Metalco Quality Department for advice.
In caso di dubbi sulla corretta procedura di manutenzione, è possibile rivolgersi all’Ufficio Qualità di Metalco per una consulenza.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS APPLICABLE TO ALL METALCO’S PRODUCTS IN ANY MATERIAL

Upon receipt of the goods, where it is not possible to place and/or install them within a few days, they must always be removed from plastic (nylon) packaging to allow ventilation and prevent the formation of condensation that can irreparably damage the product.
Particularly, the packaging should always be removed immediately if it is not possible to keep the goods in a covered place protected from sunlight.
